Temporary Pause

Hi everyone

I won’t be posting so much for a while; I am GM’ing a PbF of Numenera called ‘Tears of the Gods’ over on RPGGeek. The Game started yesterday; feel free to drop over and take a look.

Years ago, I came across a poem on an internet site. I can’t remember the site, or the Game system, or the author. However, I do love the poem – it, to me, sums up fantasy roleplaying to a ‘T’. So I’m going to re-post it here.

To repeat – I didn’t write this, no challenge or plagiarism is intended.

Our fortunes cast in arcane currents,
Our hearts joyful, though far from home.
On rolling waves in the Astral sea,
We sail beneath the moon and stars.
Have you a wish? It’s ours to answer,
Or pay your fare on our voyage of dreams,
Over mountains, seas, and endless sands,
A hundred cities, before you’ll see home.
Open the sails and steer the wheel.
The star-shine smiles on our endeavour.
Which way blows the wind?
And what will our fortunes be?

Isn’t it fantastic? I have a copy inside my GM notes and on the front page of the notebook I use for the Journal of Sica Sendrillar. Every time I read it I get a ‘sense of wonder.’

COMBAT – Who gets attacked?

  • I wrote this for Numenera, but can be used in any syste.

Very often, PC’s say “I’ll attack the one that he just hit”. In the reality of melee; this would be hard. Watch any TV brawl; everyone fights everyone. Also, it is sometimes difficult for the GM to decide who gets attacked.

  1. On the centre of the table, have a pot with nine counters, three of each colour.

  1. GM notes – split the number of creatures between the colours as desired.

Six creatures would be 2 RED. 2 BLUE, 2 YELLOW. Seven creatures could be 2 RED, 4 BLUE, 1 YELLOW

  1. Player attacks a creature, pulls a counter. It’s RED. GM says, pick creature 1 or 2 and make the attack. The counter is returned to the pot. Next Round the Player pulls a BLUE. Now they have to pick a number in the BLUE range.

  1. This allows for the players to remember who they have hit; whilst still putting in some randomness.

  1. If a colour is pulled that has no option, then the PC can choose any colour, or do something else.

Creatures attack

Each PC pulls a counter, plus one for any NPC allies. The colour indicates who will be targeted by the creatures; dividing attacks equally and also allowing for any multiple attackers.

If there is one (or more) Boss Monsters, then add ONE GREEN token to the pot.

This has been tested and it works quite well. GMI are still used as desired by the GM and can override anything.

Sica and Vantarn have been ambushed by 5 Murden out on the road.

GM assigns the Murden 2 RED, 2 BLUE, and 1 YELLOW

Round 1

Vantarn goes first, pulls Yellow. Attacks the Yellow Murden and does 4 damage.

Sica goes next, pulls Red. Chooses to attack Red Murden 1, does 5 damage.

Murden attack. Sica pulls Yellow, Vantarn pulls Blue.

– The Yellow Murden attacks Sica

– Both Blue Murden attack Vantarn

– The RED Murden don’t act, but the GM could use them to act as a GMI

Round 2

Vantarn pulls Yellow. He’s already hurt this creature, so he puts Effort into damage. He hits and the YELLOW Murden goes down.

Sica pulls Yellow. The Yellow Murden is down; so Sica can pick who he wants. He picks Red Murden 1; hits and puts it down.

Murden attack. Sica pulls Yellow, Vantarn pulls Blue.

– The Yellow Murden is down, so Sica is not attacked (unless the GM invokes a GMI)

– Both Blue Murden attack Vantarn

Some Time Off

I had to go into hospital yesterday for an operation on both ears; it’s a long story but basically if I had the operation done there is a possibility that I will lose my hearing or become partially deaf. If I DIDN’T have the operation done then I would almost certainly go deaf. Some choice!

This means I’m off work atm and can’t hear at all (due to having my ears plugged up.) Fortunately, I’ve got lots or reading to catch up on.

As a get  well present, my wife had a choice between flowers and ‘Into the Deep’, for Numenera. She chose ‘Into the Deep’. A glance through today;  well impressed and the Wayfarers are almost certainly heading underwater soon (once I can GM again).

I’ve also been intending to run ‘Ashen Stars’; we tried ‘Night’s Black Agents’; liked the system but couldn’t get to grips with the setting. I bought the CR and I’m putting together a Laser crew; probably try this solo first, using the usual mish-mash of solo systems.

I can also update Uncanny Worlds; I’ve still got the wanderings of Sica Sendrillar to finish posting and that solo Game is still on-going.

Gaming Resolutions 2015

Some New Year Gaming Resolutions that I’m going to start the year with (!)

1. Restart the Currents of Space solo Game (Stars Without Number)

2. Finish updating this blog with the Beasts and Barbarians write-ups (what I’ve posted so far happened 2013-2014), we are currently on Issue 3 of Season 2.

3. Finish reading The Laundry novels and get to play the RPG at least once

4. Make it to Games Expo this year

5. Run at least one Game in the updated Mindjammer setting

6. Draw a star map (for any Game) that I’m happy with.
